Healthy and Sane

One fishy day

May 4th, 2010 · 26 Comments · breakfast, salad, sushi

It’s been one fishy day today… literally :) I’ve been craving sushi pretty much since I woke up. I already planned my meals for the day so I tried to ignore my craving but eventually I gave in. It’s okay to know what you want and it’s okay to honor your cravings… especially when they are healthy. πŸ˜€

Before we get to the fishiness, let’s talk…

Nonfat yogurt, 1 apple, TJ’s nutty American trek mix, Zoe’s granola

This trail mix makes my yogurt bowls every time. Thank you, TJ’s, for bringing it back. πŸ˜€

Last chocolate peanut butter granola bar

I really enjoyed these but I’d like to make something a little lower in sugar. I’m normally ok with a little more sugar than usual before a workout because I feel like the simple carbs will be used for fuel right away, but sometimes I like to eat granola bars as a snack (not necessarily before a workout) so it would be good to have something a little healthier on hand. Lauren’s chocolate cherry granola bars caught my eye today. Do you have a granola bar recipe you love?

PS – we are still looking for an outdoor furniture set. For now this is the set-up. I still love it. πŸ˜€

Fishy course numero uno coming up…

Mixed greens, tuna steak, olive gnocchi, sour kraut, fresh tomatoes and edamame spread, dressed with lemon juice

The tuna and gnocchi were leftovers from Saturday’s dinner in Maine. I still owe you a post about that. I promise to not to hold out much longer. :)

The edamame spread was a great little addition to the salad. I dipped everything in it. Yum!

Dessert: chocolate cookie with white chocolate chips

And then the sushi craving hit again… hard. So I made it happen.

Fishy course numero dos: wildfire maki from Samurai (from the specials menu) – spicy tuna maki topped with tuna, jalapenos and garlic, blow-torched and served with ponzu sauce

+ sushi appetizer (chef’s choice of 6 pieces of sushi)

Hello fishies 😎

Honestly this was not the best sushi I’ve had. It didn’t seem that fresh. I want sushi to melt in my mouth – this wasn’t the case today. I’m going to think twice about going back to that place. πŸ˜•

After everything was set and done, Adam finally came home and delivered a gift from my parents (my birthday is coming up in a few weeks) – a new lens!!! I immediately started playing with it. Yeah, I’ve got work to do, that’s for sure. The pics with the new super fast lens are so blurry! 😯

Random pics of the night…

Mexican frittata I made for Adam… it was delicious if I do say so myself :)

New photographs we got at a gallery in Rockland, ME. You like? πŸ˜‰

Eventually there was a bit more snacking.

Multiply these nuts times 3. Yeah, I need to put them in little baggies asap, otherwise we may be in trouble here. πŸ˜†

And that’s all I’ve got tonight. Peace out…. and honor your cravings!

The photos with your new lens looks great! What lenses do you usually use for your food photos? I have been craving sushi lately, I need to whip some up or pick some up this week.

I HAVE to bag up almonds because I know how many I’ll eat when left to my own devices. All of them!

Bummer that that sushi was not so good… because it looks DELICIOUS! Sushi is my favorite food and I canΒ΄t get it anywhere around here, and my attempts at making it have turned out subpar. (Well, its been edible, but letΒ΄s face it, anything drenched in soy sauce is pretty good…)

I like your patio furniture. If you don’t mind me asking, where did you find it? I’m moving to a condo in July and will have a small deck. Something like that would be perfect for me. Thanks!

Aw, the picture of your warthog is adorable, lol. And how gorgeous are those photographs you picked up in Maine? I absolutely love seascape photography, but I blame that entirely on being a multi-generational New Englander ;p

Still not sold on sushi. I just can’t bring myself to enjoy it.

Also, the Mexican frittata looks delicious, but you really should have saved it for today. Or you could instead recognize Cinco de Mayo and eat some tasty tacos! Kyle and I will be :)

The frittata looks gorgeous! Never thought I’d say that, but it’s true!

Run Sarah – I’ve been using my kit zoom lens (18-55mm) but this new lens should be better. That’s once I figure out how to use it. Most pictures I took last night were crazy blurry. :(

    MelissaNibbles – Target! πŸ˜€

Tiffany – let’s just say I celebrated it early (even though I didn’t even eat it, just made it for Adam). It’s the thought that counts, right? πŸ˜‰

I love the pictures you bought in Maine. I love all ocean-themed photos. And along those lines…I love seafood! You can’t have too much fish!

  • #11 - Molly

    Hey Elina,

Beautiful photos, and it sounds like you had an awesome weekend! I wish we were going on a long run/walk/coffee break to catch up about it all..

Hope you and Adam are doing well!

I’m sorry the sushi wasn’t all that great – I was about to say how delicious that maki sounds! and the blueberry french toast in your Main post looks to.die.for :)

  • #14 - Kloe

Breakfast is the most GLORIOUS meal in my opinion… and seemingly many others! It just has everything you could want… That trek mix and granola seems to die for!
Oh and I get in trouble too if I don’t portion my almonds… πŸ˜‰

bummer about the sushi, but gotta honor the cravings! gorgeous pics, and have fun playing with the new lens!

  • #16 - Diana @ frontyardfoodie

I’m totally not a sushi person (it comes down to texture for me) but I do love fish!

Congrats on getting a new lens! How fun!

Love the maine photos, really make me miss new england. I haven’t heard of that sushi place in boston but I never found one I truly loved when I went to college there. I went to Haru for my bday and felt it was overrated. I sometimes went to Douzo with friends and that was pretty yummy!

Yay for new lenses. It definitely takes some time to get used to them, or even in shooting in a new environment. All of my pictures have been coming out a little blurrier since I moved here so I’ve been trying to figure out if I’m just not used to the conditions or if I did something to my camera that would make it a little off. :-/ May have to go to a camera store this weekend to see.

Also, where is your patio set from? I have one from target that looks very similar.

Chocolate cookies with white chocolate chips are my all time favorite probably, soo good!
I have never had real sushi, the only one that I have had is cucumber roll. Maybe I will be brave and try a California roll or something like that soon!

  • #20 - Kerstin

Oh great, now I’m craving sushi! And yay for your new lens :)

  • #21 - Lindsay

I love the photos! They’re pretty similar to what we have in our house!!

  • #22 - Beth @ DiningAndDishing

tuna steak AND olive gnocchi in one meal!? that would be my last supper if i could pick anything…can’t wait to see this post!

  • #23 - brandi

TJ’s trail mixes are THE BEST! I’m always sad when I run out.

Your sushi dinner looks so good…it makes me realize how long it’s been since I’ve had sushi! Way too long!
Lucky girl with the new lens! Your photos are always so pretty anyway. Looking forward to seeing what you do with the new one.
    Cheers to honoring cravings!
