Slow and steady sometimes loses the race

April 6th, 2010 · 19 Comments · breakfast, eggs

I have a lot to say but this time I’d like to actually keep those words to myself. I kind of binged last night. It’s been a while and I’m not sure what happened. It also wasn’t one of those crazy, “quick, stuff yourself as fast as possible” binges. It was slow and steady. I ate until it was time for bed. I feel sick this morning. I’ll leave it at that. Before all this madness, there were some yummy eats. Let’s see them!

The breakfast pizza is back! :) This one was made of ww wrap, 1T Barney Butter, oikos, 1/2 pear, Zoe’s granola and cocoa nibs

SO good – so many textures + flavors (+ it’s pretty filling in a perfectly satisfying way)

Leftover Easter desserts were all over my office. I partook in some of them…

+ another little piece of sweet ricotta pie. I thought I was done with sweets by then. 👿

Another meatball banh mi sandwich. I had to 😉

+ an orange. I missed these guys!

Chocolate granola bar

Abs + Rack-it-Up classes. We had a new instructor who was a million times harder. I was dying on set #10 of push-ups (only a slight exaggeration – actually maybe that’s not an exaggeration at all).

Dinner was fabulous once again. I followed this recipe from Cara’s Cravings for spinach & artichoke frittata. I used 3 eggs, 2 egg whites (all the eggs we had left), and added some chickpeas (maybe 1/2 can) for satiety + grape tomatoes for freshness.

I am so annoyed with how horrible the pictures came out because this was a really great dinner! The gooey goat cheese was definitely the star ingredients but all the other veggies played very nicely together. The grape tomatoes were a great idea too, if I say so myself. 😀

Okay, so this was dinner. After that I had 1 cookie dough (last one) and then some roasted almonds, then a zbar, an orange and a serving of trail mix. I think it was a combination of wanting more cookies (we didn’t have any) and guilt associated with my mile-long to-do list that I wasn’t doing anything about. Also with the fact that I already ate way too much today and yet someone still craved more sweets (I know, I know, many of you find that if you eat sweets, you want more of them but I can’t cut them out of my diet. I will go crazy!). Anyways, it’s done and over with. Today is a new day (although I’m not going to lie – it’s really hard to start over when you still feel disgusting. The idea of food just grosses me out right now. Bleh).

So here is the schedule for this week…

Today – run/walk with Shannon during lunch, drinks with reader Melissa and husband at night

Tomorrow – SHRED class during lunch, photography class after work

Thursday – yoga class during lunch, Taste of the Nation after work (is anyone else going to that?)

Friday – ARUBA!!! But before that, I also need to try my bathing suit on and not freak out, pack all clothes, get my nails done, pre-schedule guest posts and do a few million other things. Getting on that plane will feel SWEET.

What’s your week looking like? I always seem to overbook myself, especially before vacations. 😯

So far… plenty of Yoga classes. I’m aiming to take 4 classes week since I stopped my Yoga Challenge at their studio. Plenty of job hunting (sending out replies and hoping for a response) and bringing my car to an auto shop for a quick repair.

I agree, the tomatoes are a great addition!

Hope you have fun at Taste the Nation – I keep meaning to buy my tickets for the Worcester version which is in a couple weeks!

Runs and enjoying the weather before the rain comes back! You must be SO excited for your vacation!!

Hooray for vacation! I’ve been QUITE the slacker in the exercise department for the last few weeks, and we’re going to Texas in May, so I started working out again yesterday morning. Tonight we’re meeting with a jeweler to design wedding rings (OMG!) and tomorrow going out for drinks with friends. It’s not as exciting as Aruba, but we’re doing a quick day trip to Maine on Saturday to deliver my mom’s birthday present. ALSO I wanted to tell you I finally tried Barney Butter and now I see what all the fuss is about! Yum. It’s been part of breakfast for the last three days.

Love your breakfast pizzas, they look so tasty! My week looks moderately busy with an exam on Fri then leaving for Idaho on Sun!

I’m sorry you had a bad night. It sounds like you’ve been going through a lot lately. I hope that your vacation helps you unwind and recharges your spirit :)

I think when we get overwhelmed and stressed about too many things to take care of life, we turn to food for comfort. I do this, so I know how you are feeling. But it will be OK because you work out so much and even your bingeing foods are still pretty healthy. : )

You will love Aruba. I went 3 years ago. So pretty! Some R & R will be just what the doctor ordered!

You’re doing a great job – try not to get down on yourself. It’s a work in progress :)

Aruba sounds amazing!!! I stopped there on a cruise I went on in college and the sand was like no other I have ever seen. Enjoy.

Your weekend will definitely be better than mine, we’re moving! Moving isn’t fun, but I’m super excited to finally start setting up our little baby’s room :)

Hey Elina…I know it’s so hard, but try not to feel too guilty about last night. Stuff like that happens, and you’re absolutely right that today is a new day!

Don’t worry too much about last night — you have been doing so well! And your meal looks incredible! Just think of all the fun you will have in Aruba! I love your positive attitude =)

those granola bars look really good! thanks for linking the recipe. i know those slow and steady binges.. oh man. they really creep up on you. when i do that, i kick myself and wish i had just sat down and had a bowl of cereal and enjoyed it instead of a little piece here and a small handful there! love your attitude on the whole thing. props. ARUBA.. you lucky duck!

    p.s. i love your blog :)

I can totally clean out my entire kitchen doing the slow eating thing. It sucks at the time but looks like all your exercise this week will help things I’m sure!

Enjoy your week leading up to vacay- oh, and a little spray tan or self tan helps the bathing suit look a million times better for some reason!

hey – it happens to the best of us! Don’t worry i assure you in the grand scheme of things IT DOESN’T MATTER AT ALL as long as you don’t beat yourself up about it. Be kind to yourself and know you are worthy and can tackle anything that comes your way! Also something that works for me when i get in that grazing stage is a tbsp of cocoa(unsweetened powder) with some hot water and sweetner. Its amazingly comforting and actually provides a gram of protein, a gram of fat and 2 grams of fiber for 12 calories total=> quite the bargain.

I didn’t do great on the eating front yesterday, either. I am wondering if both you and I have the tendency to slightly deprive ourselves when we are eating “normally,” even if we don’t feel deprived at the time. There really is no other explanation! I wish I had some words of wisdom, Elina, but I’m super frustrated, too :(

I truly admire your honesty; i have been following for a few months and love your blog! :-) Enjoy Aruba!

I hope you are feeling better today and not being hard on yourself. The day after is the toughest. I find when I have sugar early in the day, I am much more likely to fall off the wagon later on. Easter treat hanging around might have derailed me too :)

Everything is going to be fine, it’s good that you recognzied why it happened and that it wasn’t as out of control as it could be. I find myself going through a similar struggle at least once a week. Your making progress! Aruba will be amazing, enjoy it!

I’ve had ‘binges’ like that! They’re weird…often the steady ones happen when I’ve had a hard workout, or have been eating a lot less the past few days. I crave actual food and not just junk.

You still feel sick from them, I agree…but I still feel better after them than I would after a horrible, uncontrollable stuff-your-face binge!
