Healthy meals, naughty snacks

January 26th, 2010 · 20 Comments · breakfast, oats, salad, yogurt

I was looking at pictures of my day’s worth of food just now and realizes that breakfast, lunch and dinner were model meals – healthy + balanced, and then each of my snacks was a little treat that I got to sneak in between. I’m tracking my calories and macro-nutrient intake on and that’s why I can say that at the end it really does all balance out. I was in the range of every single category I track. Sweet! 😎

I tried to start the morning with some overnight oats, except later in the day I realized that what I prepared last night was just yogurt with oats… you need milk for overnight oats. Hey, it still tasted pretty yummy!

In the mix – 1/3 c rolled oats, 1/2 cup nonfat yogurt, Zoe’s granola, fresh mango, 1 medjool date and walnut pieces. Sweet and tart – delicious. :)

Fresh banana bread (from the office)

Mixed greens, grape tomatoes, 1/4 avocado, pinto beans + meat from 1.5 chicken drumsticks, dressed in 1T of Annie’s balsamic vinaigrette

So much delicious healthy fat – the avocado + pinto beans were super creamy and the chicken tasted extra buttery (no butter there, just dark meat which I rarely eat).

I ran outside today!! I received an email from my sister today telling me she ran outside at 6 am this morning. I was so impressed that I decided to go for a run outside myself… and I even found a buddy to go with me. A girl that works at my gym is training for a half marathon right now. We snuck out of work mid-day for a 40 minute run. I didn’t start my garmin right away, but I think we held an 8:30 minute pace (it was hard!!!) and ran for about 4.5 miles. The cooldown walk never felt so good (even though it was freezing and windy out)!!

Late night at work calls for super easy dinners – this is V8 tomato soup + a toast with organic cheddar

The soup was a little sweet on its own, but the cheddar toasts balanced it out really well.

Mmm, who doesn’t love grilled cheese dipped in tomato soup? This soup even had other hidden veggies (like zucchini). Love that!

[100 calories] – This cookie is nothing special. 😕

A few spoonfuls of pomegranate seeds… I love how they burst in your mouth! 😀

Total calories consumed: 1622 + pomegranate seeds (can’t find their nutritionals right now)

How do you balance out your meals + snacks? Do you include dessert with a meal or eat it as a snack (if at all)? I usually prefer sweeter snacks over savory ones, but once in a while I crave pickles or hummus. 😆

One 155g pomegranate or 88g of seeds are worth 70 calories :)

I have to say its been really interesting watching you calorie count and I’m pretty impressed! I have calorie counted in the past and whenever I did, I would always try to make my meals as simple as possible so that I didnt have to add up a bunch of things and their serving sizes. But you still make your meals so interesting and I think thats really cool! Way to go!

Nicole – thanks! I’ll add it to the spark database :)

Nicole – thanks for your comment – that’s why I started this blog, actually. It’s about eating delicious, healthy meals, not deprivation!! :)

Looks like a great day of food! I definitely go for savory snacks, especially things like tortilla chips (aka crack chips lol). I can’t even keep them in the house, or I will eat them! Great job going for a run outside, I can’t imagine working out during lunch, its a good idea!

I am all about the sweeter snacks too. My meals will usually be savory (besides oats for breakfast ;)) and snacks will be my treats. Still healthy, but treaty. I love eating that way!

I dont eat dessert, I like snacks! Sometimes my meals are just a bunch of snacks by themself! :s It feels like I eat all day. Sometimes I check my calories intake just to make sure that I do not go overboard… but I am always good. I guess we all have this tendancy to think that if we eat all day we consume more calories… which is so wrong… since we eat a lot smaller portions each time. I even believe that it is better this way, cause you get a diversity of food and vitamins from each “snack”.

Oh I so love crusty bread with melted cheese! Then it gets all soft in the soup. SO GOOD! :)

    Love the naughty snacks.

After I cut out sugar from my diet (it was causing horrible headaches) it was easy to regulate snacks. Now instead of calories on a salty snack I look at sodium. If it’s at all high I skip it and eat a piece of fruit. It works great!

I crave sweet and salty, so I love working fruit and veggies in to my meals

I tend to get really addicted to sugar so I try to keep my “treats” to 1 a day at most, and usually in a somewhat healthy sweet snack. I also often prefer a glass of wine or tea to a dessert in the evening. I would say that my main meals are similar to yours except that I tend to up the calories in my meals so I feel fuller- that usually takes care of cravings for me. I do snack of course. I often eat sweet snacks (fruit, bars, nut butters, etc…) but lately I’ve really been enjoying cheese and crackers in the afternoon.

    Great run.
I’ll add to the positive comments on the calorie counting. It’s refreshing to see that on a blog. I think many bloggers are too afraid of getting a bad rap for counting calories. I’m glad you aren’t afraid to do what’s right for you and aren’t afraid to share it on your blog with us. It’s so refreshing and honest…something I’m finding to be rare more and more lately. You rock girl!

I love cheesy toast and Apolinaras always makes fun of me and says it’s my invention and no one else eats it so I’m going to show him this post :) I’m impressed you ran outside!

I love that you list the calories for everything you eat! I’m such a calorie counter and I feel like I am instinctively always doing the math in my head haha.

    The cheesy toast looks GREAT!

Try the chocolate fudge cookies in that brand, they are better and basically to. die. for. Promise!

I just snack all day long. I have always been a big time grazer, but I try to keep it 90% healthy and then add in some indulgences like a nice soft cheese, chocolate, or my weakness, chips and guac.

I definitely go for sweet over salty. All my snacks involve some form of sugar, but usually fruit!

  • #18 - Jenna

I love tomato soup and grilled cheese!!

  • #19 - Jess

I usually stick to a sweet treat after dinner, I can’t go without SOMETHING dessert-like, even if just a little piece of chocolate or some fat free pudding or something. It just ends the day perfectly so I don’t feel totally deprived by eating so balanced during the day :-)

Melissa – thank you for such a sweet comment. I’m so glad that some of you really get where I’m coming from and don’t put such a negative connotation on calorie counting. I’ll keep posting the cals as long as I’m counting! Thanks for the positive reinforcement again. 😀

Kerstin – yeah, show it to him. There are many of us who enjoy this combo. :)

Jess – what’s dinner without dessert, right? 😉
