Nice weather takes priority over packing (La Verdad + Berryline)

August 19th, 2009 · 16 Comments · Boston, breakfast, dessert, Mexican, restaurant reviews

Packing has not been the most enjoyable experience lately so Adam and I decided to take a little break and go out to dinner + dessert in our neighborhood. We’ll only be moving less than 25 minutes away (walking), but I still feel like we have to take advantage of the last few days in our ‘hood. Plus, the weather was absolutely gorgeous and being cooped up inside the house just felt like torture.

Dinner was an easy decision after reading this post on La Verdad, which reminded me of how much I love this place. Added bonus: they sell tacos for $1 on Tuesdays (yay Taco Tuesday!) + it’s just a few minutes walk from our current apartment. They offer 3 options for Taco Tuesday: pollo pibil, carnitas, and pastor traditional. I got 1 of each + another pollo pibil. These guys are small and crazy delicious so 4 is just the right amount 😀

Carnitas: confit pork, cilantro, onions, salsa verde, chicharrones

2 pollos + 1 pastor:

Pastro Traditional: “El Farolito” pork adobo, roasted pineapple, lime, cilantro, onion

Pollo Pibil: achiote and sour orange rubbed chicken

Of course I asked for no onions on anything, and after a little mix-up, I got everything sans onions :) It’s actually hard to find Mexican restaurants that will do that, so brownie points to La Verdad just for that. Everything was super flavorful (can you see all the delicious sauces?!)… and the tortillas are my absolute favorite. They just taste really authentic and homemade. Love this place! *Thanks goodness I’m not a vegetarian because I’m pretty sure I’d be out of lack here*

Of course a beverage had to be enjoyed on this lovely night out. I had a glass of Savignon Blanc, which Adam helped me finish. I had to leave a little stomach room for dessert 😉

Dessert was another local favorite: Berryline! We used to frequent the Harvard Square location but since they opened one right in our building (!!!!) I’ve only been once. Kind of ironic. Since we’ll be moving out of our place this weekend, I just had to have it 1 more time. The place was packed. I guess we’re not the only ones who had this brilliant idea of enjoying froyo on a hot summer night 😆

So many toppings to choose from!

I got my favorite: original froyo with mango + pecans … + this time I also added granola (Adam pointed out that the 3rd topping is only 15 cents so I gave it a go).

Yup, incredible as always! Seriously, how do they make nonfat yogurt taste so creamy?!! I want to know! Btw, 3 toppings was a bit much for me. I’m sticking to my 2 tried and true next time.

These blueberry raspberry oat bran muffins jumped at me on my most recent trip to Trader Joe’s. After browsing through a very short and compelling ingredients list, these babies came home with me :)

Breakfast: muffin + ezekiel toast with peanut butter hummus (for some reason I was still hungry after the muffin).

This muffin is full of rolled oats! The texture surprised me as I had my first bite, but after realizing what kind of “animal” I was dealing with, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Adam (to my surprise) loved these too! I thought the box would last me 4 days, but it’s already gone 😀

Pre workout snack: apple + 2 (unpictured) Ak Mak crackers. Workout was a sweaty spin class + 20 minutes on the elliptical!

Lunch: leftover chicken tikka with brown rice + watermelon

Mid afternoon snack: TJ’s 100 calorie dark chocolate bar. These guys are perfect for satisfying my sweet tooth and have an added bonus of providing my body with some antioxidants :)

Note: today was a higher calorie day than I would ideally like to have, but I am really proud of not snacking mindlessly and that’s what I’m focusing on right now. There were many times when I randomly wanted to have a snack, or felt like I was hungry but knew a meal was literally minutes away so I patiently waited instead of just impulsively grabbing a bite to eat. If I am able to stop emotional or mindless eating, I think my food related struggles will end. I’m taking it one day at a time and giving myself props for today. 😀

LOVE Mexican. The only places I’ve ever had it have been chains though.

My sister and I want to make a trip in town for some good ice cream this weekend…were are debating JP Licks or Berry Line…what would you suggest?!

  • #3 - Elina

Pam – yeah, they don’t advertise it. You have to be “in the know” 😉

Julie – many chain Mexican restaurants are good too. Different but still good. Tough question on the ice cream. I think if I’m craving froyo and fresh fruit (basically something a little lighter) – definitely Berryline, but if I want some indulgent ice cream – then JP Licks for sure! JP Licks is the only place where I allow myself to have “real ice cream” because it’s just so amazing I think it’s “worth it” 😀

Thanks! I guess we’ll have to decide Sunday what kind of mood we’re in.
Oh! I thought of a non chain Mexican place I like, it’s right down the street from me…I can’t believe I forgot. It’s call El Sarape, it’s super authentic. They even only sell Mexican beers AND they have killer margaritas.

I cannot imagine packing up my place! Some how I have acquired SO much stuff. With the dog it’s become so much more apparent how cluttered my place is so I’ve been making a conscious effort to donate or resell things.

Yum! Your food looks delicious. I am actually going to the Border Cafe tonight in Harvard Sq. for Mexican. I’m not sure where my favorite place is though!

I’m not sure that I could leave livinf somewhere with frozen yogurt in the building. :)

Hi Elina! I’ve have been following along without commenting for too long. Now that I am venturing into the world of blogging, I figured it was time to stop lurking. I have related to many of your posts related to healthy eating. And I definitely relate to the exhaustion that come with moving. My husband and I just moved back to Boston…and because it was a quick move with no time to search for right house to buy, we get to do it all again next summer! Take all the breaks you need. It always gets done in the end!

I love La Verdad’s tacos. Probably the best I’ve had here in Boston!!!
OH my gosh they have a Berryline right by you!!???
I think I might have to convince Joey we should go there tonight. If not tonight most definitely tomorrow!!! YAYYYYY!

Julie – I’m sure you’ll be happy with either place at the end of the day :) That Mexican place sounds perfect!

Kelly – we’ve definitely done a good amount of sorting and donating to good will over the last few years. It’s still a hard job packing everything, but at least someone gets to benefit from it… or at least I hope someone does. 😀

Nicole – that’s a pretty good spot too. I’ve been there a few times. Good prices. Oh and believe me, it’s hard to leave a place with froyo in the building 😉

Shannon – thanks for coming out of the lurking shell  Moving is definitely not fun, but you are so right – it gets done at the end! That’s what I keep telling myself…

Coco – let me know how you like it! Actually I already know you will 😆

I LOOOVE Mexican food, and after living in San Diego for three years, I’ve earned the right to be judgemental of Boston’s Mexican establishment.

Admittedly, I haven’t tried La Verdad yet, but the closest I’ve found to legit Baja style tacos is Baja Betty’s in Brookline Village. You should check it out; total hole in the wall place, but these people know their Mexican!

    i know their secret
they put crack in that stuff!
i think i tried my first pinkberry a few weeks ago and have been dreaming (and eating..on a regular basis) ever since. and i can’t believe you think 3 toppings is too much. i need a minimum of 3 … granola always being one 😀

  • #14 - Elina

Tiffany – we need to try that place asap if it’s close to San Diego tacos. Yum! You should try La Verdad though… I’m a fan :)

Innz, I think you’re right! I knew you’d love it btw. What took you so long to try it? 😆

I’ve had a lot of high-cal days (but not bingeing) lately, and I actually think they help me not binge. It helps me register “ok, I indulged, I met my needs, I am not deprived,” but also helps me see that even though I indulged, I did not binge or “ruin” anything, which is a signal to stop. And really, I am finding that I can get away with high-cal days and not really gain weight…it’s the bingeing that sets me back. Have you found that?

  • #16 - Elina

Lara, I think higher calorie days without bingeing is SO much healthier… mentally and physically. And yes, I found that I can still about maintain my weight even with higher cal days as long as I don’t binge. I’m glad you are happier (and binge free) these days! 😀
