Trying to have fun

So you guys know by now (from little hints here and there) that I’m going on vacation on Friday (OMG it’s THIS Friday!!! – as in tomorrow, yay!).  I’m going to Hong Kong and Singapore for 2 weeks.  Yes, it’s 100% for pleasure and 0% business.  My husband and I are both giddy just thinking about it.  I mean Singapore is like foodie heaven and who doesn’t love Chinese food?!  Anyways, because of my upcoming vacation work has been crazy.  All of a sudden all the deadlines are approaching.  This made me miss my workout on Tuesday (hate that!) but yesterday I decided to hit up a few classes.  I really wasn’t in the mood to work out (and was super snacky all day long which normally would make me want to just give up and go home and snack/eat some more) so I figured – what the hell, I’ll try some fun classes! :)  This is where the title of my post comes from, so let’s get to the workout first…

WORKOUT

I started with a 10 minute abs class (well it’s actually 15 minutes but I was late, ha).  It was a brutal 10 minutes… I love that (hate wasting time at the gym).  After that this is where the “fun” began.  The plan was to attend the Step and Sculpt class, followed by ZumbaHave you ever tried Zumba?  I’ve heard such great things about it.  I knew it wouldn’t be as good of a workout as a run on a treadmill, but in the spirit of having fun while working out, I thought it would be good.  And step classes I absolutely love, although this particular one I only took once over a year ago and remember not being that crazy about it (because it wasn’t fast enough) but again, I thought it would be fun.  Obviously I was crazy, because I was SO bored the entire time!!!  The step class was sooooooo slow, the only part I liked was the little breaks with weights and even that was like from an 80’s step aerobics video.  Seriously, what was I thinking?  I was in a pretty sour mood by the time that ended, so I thought I’ll allow myself to stay for only 1/2 of the Zumba class if I wanted to…. oh, did I want to leave!  Again, it was just so absolutely ridiculous.  I used to dance so I had no problem following the moves but we all looked so silly.  And I’d get over it if it was a good workout, but it wasn’t.  I tried to jump, twist, move as fast/hard as I could but all I could think of is finding a good time to sneak out of there (of course somehow I ended up right at the front… damn).  Finally after 25 minutes of “torture” the girl gave us a water break.  Sweet relief!  I ran out of there, grabbed my ipod and jumped on the elliptical.  I never thought I’d be so excited about an elliptical!  I did 30 minutes there.  A little better, but I was still in a crappy workout mood.  I felt like I was going through the motions.  I wasn’t challenged at all, and I spent 2 hours at the gym.  Boo!  The good news at least I burned some calories, because my mouth was definitely busy stuffing things into it… all day long (all healthy, no bingeing – thank god I had enough self control for that).  Workout stats (pathetic for almost 2 hours!)…

  • Duration: 1:50 (+ some stretching)
  • Calories burnt: 668 (50% fat)
  • Ave HR: 122; Max HR: 190

Dinner was awesome though, and definitely improved my mood 😀

BEST MEAL OF THE DAY

We didn’t go grocery shopping this weekend because we’re trying to eat everything we have on hand before leaving for 2 weeks.  That means I had to get creative.  This dinner was the most delicious way to use up everything on hand (chicken + bread for breadcrumbs were in the freezer).  I saw Ellie Krieger make this chicken parm recipe a while back and couldn’t get it off my mind.  It was absolutely perfect!  Although I’d say that good tomato sauce really is key here and we happened to have 1/2 jar of delicious tomato sauce open in the fridge, just waiting for its moment to shine.  I made a simple salad on the side, again just using up stuff we have in the fridge.

Can you see how crispy the chicken is?  Best chicken parm ever (better than the greesy restaurant stuff I’ve had for a fraction of the calories!).  I had a little more of the chicken after polishing off the plate seen above.  Mmm, so good!

OTHER EATS

EK banana buckwheat pancakes with fresh banana on top

mojo mountain mix bar

tomato soup + FFL english muffin with laughing cow cheese & hummus

little carrot cake choc chip cookie - I ate 1/2

banana strawberry pecan muffin

baby carrots - snacking while cooking dinner

some vino

serving of TJ's trek mix

TJ's 100 calorie dark chocolate bar

Yes there was a lot of food.  I definitely ate a few things when I wasn’t hungry, just because I felt like them.  I need to work on that.  The good news I definitely didn’t binge on anything.  I was responsible and snacked on carrots (and a little wine) while making dinner (even though I was really hungry) as to not spoil my appetite.  And after dinner when I needed dessert, instead of just grabbing a bag of trail mix, I actually measured out a serving.  Small victories here, people.

I didn’t count calories today…. I’m estimating I’m probably right around 2000.  Maybe I’ll lose weight on vacation?  Yeah, right! :)

  • I’m glad you didn’t beat yourself up over being snacky i think we are all too hard on ourselves sometiems and then we binge. Thats too bad about the gym! I only took zumba once it was fun but like you said not a good workout. I did go to a Body Jam class at Gold’s Gym a few weeks ago and got a pretty good workout after that. I was sore at least! My butt was really sore and I was very happy about this haha.

I’m so jealou about your vacation should be soooo fun! Enjoy!

  • Sorry that your workout wasn’t all you hoped! Two hours is so much time to put in, too. You still burnt some great calories, though!
All your food looks great as usual, and I definitely think it’s great you indulged without going nuts. That’s something I am aware of lately–instead of being “on” or “off,” if you have a higher-calorie day, it can still be controlled and healthy. You did a great job with that 😉

  • in college we had a PE requirement (I thought it was absolutely ridiculous to force someone to workout when they’re over 18 and capable of making their own choices but you needed it to graduate) and I took Zumba. HATED IT. So freaking boring- not a workout at all. At least the way this instructor taught it. Ugh I dreaded going and left that class in a horrible mood every time. Sorry your workout wasn’t what you hoped it would be :( Not sure what gym you’re at, but George at BSC teaches absolutely killer and amazing steps classes that I LOVE.

  • sorry you didnt like the workout! i have always wanted to try zumba but this has me hesitant. i wonder if you just had a bad instructor? love the chicken parmmm

  • Honestly, I think everyone needs a break from counting calories every once in a while – it can drive me crazy sometimes! Besides, you were so active today, even if you hated Zumba. I am not a big fan of it either, I was horrible at it and didn’t feel like I was getting my heart rate up =( Anyhow, yay for 2 weeks of vacay! are you posting while on vacation ??

Mmmmm.. that chicken parm looks amazing!!!

Sorry your step and zumba class didn’t work out well :( I have been a big ol chicken to take zumba… I’m not exactly coordinated! I saw the video that the fitnessista did on her website… and it looked great… but scared me off even more… haha :)

You still had an awesome calorie burn for the day! Your calorie burns are ALWAYS great :) I wish I could burn some calories like that!

And I agree, a break from calorie counting every now and then is good for the soul! I haven’t counted calories in a couple of years!

Good luck with the work deadlines!

  • I have really been wanting to try Zumba. I did a belly dancing class over the summer and really liked it but hated the teacher and have been trying to find something similar. That chicken parm does look fantastic and I don’t even usually like chicken. I’m going to have to bookmark that recipe to try. Ellie’s are always fantastic.

Hm- have to sad I’m not sad I missed Zumba! Have a great time and we’ll schedule a tough workout or a fun night out as soon as your back – or both!! xo

  • small victories is what it’s all about.

i’m so excited for your trip! you’re going to have a blast!!!!

I had a pretty lousy workout yesterday, too. I wonder if there was something in the air. I only got through a 40 minute Elliptical session before I abandoned it in favor of an ab roller (which only held my attention/motivation for another 10 minutes). I did manage a three mile walk/slow jog during the day, so I guess I did alright; I was just missing that feeling of accomplishment afterwards.

I won’t see you guys before you leave, but have a good trip! Eat lots of yummy (read: healthy) food :)

  • K

Oh my gosh – you leave tomorrow!! Have a FABULOUS trip and can’t wait to hear all about it :)

  • Elina

Inna, I go to Fitcorp. I heard there maybe some better step classes at different locations. When it gets warmer, I may have to check them out :)

Jasmine, I’ll try to do a bit of posting (no promises though but check back to find out 😉 )

Katie, I think you would have HATED this class! I’m kind of glad you couldn’t make it, because it was my idea to go. Let’s definitely set something up when I get back! 😀

Tiffany, your workout still sounds great but I know what you mean about the sense of accomplishment. Sometimes even after a decent workout, if I wasn’t challenged, I don’t feel refreshed and proud. Oh and unfortunately I can’t control myself on vacations. I let go 500%. We’ll see if there is any healthy eating (although I am bringing some stuff with me so maybe there is a small chance I won’t go completely nuts).
