First 24 hours in Hong Kong

My husband is taking a nap now, even though it’s 7:30 pm – our internal clocks are just totally screwed up!  Anyways, I’m resisting the urge to sleep too, so you guys get to read a post about my Hong Kong adventures :)

We got to the City last night after about 30 hours of traveling.  It was tough, but we really wanted to stay up for a few more hours (it was probably around 7:30 pm when we finally got to our hotel) to give us a fighting chance at getting on Hong Kong time as fast as possible.  Speaking of our hotel, it’s so cute!  We even have a kitchen in our room!!!  Ok, I don’t plan on cooking here, but still – it’s cool :D

And we got complementary waters and juice + a box of cookies.  They know the way to my heart :D

And we were off!

After walking around for a while, we finally stumbled upon a cute little restaurant.  It was packed, looked clean and modern and pretty cheap.  I have no idea what it was called.  Here is my husband outside of it.

We were pleasantly surprised that the waiters spoke English and most of the items on the menu had English translations.  Actually the thing that caught my eye was a dish that was described all in Chinese.  I asked the guy what it was and he pointed to another place on the menu where it said it was fried rice balls.  I was hoping it was a noodle dish (it looked like noodles on the picture!) but I didn’t have a plan B so I ordered it anyway.  That and some chicken wings (2 apps total).

I was pleasantly surprised when the dish arrived – it was in fact a noodle dish (maybe rice noodles?) and it was absolutely amazing!!!  Definitely the star of the meal.  It was the first thing I tasted in HK and I was in heaven. :)

I ate most of this (my husband helped me out with it :D ) I could eat about 10 more plates of this stuff!  So good!!  Minutes later arrived the wings.  I had one of them but didn’t really like them.  I figured I’d save room for dessert (you know that was coming! )

Oh and I had to try my husband’s sliced pork curry dish with some rice (it came in a fancy cast iron pot and was one of the most expensive dishes at a whopping 57 HKD ~ $7.35 USD)…

tasting Adam's pork

Pretty yummy!  Oh the whole meal was less than $13 USD.  Amazing!

Then we were off to scout the bakery scene.  There were a few that looked good before we found a dinner spot but most of them were closed by the time we got out (~10:30).  And then I saw some ice cream and just couldn’t refuse it.  Don’t judge – I travelled for 30 hours and needed a little American deliciousness.  It was smooth and creamy.  It was perfect.  I won’t buy anything American again until we come back home, though.  I’m in Asia, and I definitely want to take advantage of it!

Fast forward to today… I woke up and made yummy jasmine tea in our kitchen and had 2 cookies from our gift box (the second one was the same as the first).  The cookie looks like nothing exciting but it was absolutely amazing.  I think I may have to get a box of these to bring home.  I never thought I’d actually crave a non-chocolate dessert.  These were awesome.  Can’t wait to try the other kinds tomorrow :)

After planning out our day (very roughly!!) and finding a highly recommended breakfast place in our neighborhood, we got ready and hit the roads.  First stop – breakfast (2nd breakfast for me) at Tao Heung Super 88.  It was “hidden” on a 6th floor of a mall (there are a million malls here, all completely different and super impressive in their own way!).  If we didn’t know about it, I never would have thought to take an elevator up there to find this gem.  We were greeted by a hostess in English (yay!) and again the menu mostly had English translations.  We decided to order from the dim sum section (not traditional way with carts rolling around – we actually ordered a la carte, which was cool because we knew what we were going to eat).  Since I wasn’t very hungry, I suggested ordering only 4 small dishes and only tried them.  My husband polished off the rest and said he was stuffed!  Again our whole meal was under $13 USD!

First up, the best thing we tried – steamed shrimp dumplings.  I had 2 of these babies.  They just melted in your mouth.  Best.dumplings.ever!

Then the bbq pork buns.  Also very delicious!  I had 1.

Next came out the pancake stuffed with shredded taro.  It had lots of other veggies in it too – corn, peas, scallions, other unrecognizable yummy veggies.  I had about 1/4 of this large pancake.

Lastly came out the pork spare ribs in black bean sauce.  Not at all what either one of us expected.  There were bones in the thing and the texture was a bit funky.  We expected a thick black sauce but instead it was mostly in an oily sauce with a few black beans thrown in.  They tasted delicious but I wasn’t hungry so I only had 2 little bites.

Oh and I had to take picture of the waiter with a huge stack of dim sum dishes.  They thought it was hilarious that I snapped that photo! :)

Tomorrow we’re going to go to a traditional dim sum place that’s been highly recommended.  I can’t wait!  I seriously think I can eat dim sum every day.  The Chinese got it right! :D

All right, so then we walked around for hours.  I somehow hurt my hip and it’s killing me!  I hope this doesn’t prevent me from doing stuff on this trip.  By the end of the day I was in serious pain :(  I did finally found a cool bakery, Maxim’s cakes (a huge chain here) when I got hungry and got a chocolate roll.  It was huge, but pretty fluffy and I didn’t feel like I was stuffing my face at all.

And then around 3 pm we got hungry and found ourselves in Soho (South of Hollywood Rd) known for great restaurants.  What we didn’t realize is that none of these restaurants are Chinese!!  I really didn’t want any Italian or American food but we had no choice.  We were both starving so we settled on Staunton’s Bar & Cafe, which was actually in our traveling book with recommendations to get drinks there.  Since I wasn’t really craving their food, I decided to go the healthy route (why waste calories on something that I don’t truly want?!).  I got a grilled salmon nicoise salad.  It was small but actually pretty delicious :)

It had grilled salmon, kalamata olives, green beans, tomato slices and new potatoes over mixed greens. I ate the whole thing except for the potatoes.  I don’t like cold potatoes.

And then a few hours later, when we got to the hotel, I was pretty hungry again so I had a lemon bar larabar.  Have you tried this kind before?  I loved it!

Lemon bar larabar

Ok, this was longer than I meant it to be.  There is just so much stuff to talk about!  I leave you with a funny sign outside of one of the coffee shops we stopped by today.  Pretty funny stuff, huh? ;)  And now I want one of these :D

Traveling from Boston to Hong Kong

I’m going to try to keep this quick, but I have lots of pictures.  There was a lot of food.  I started out fairly well, trying to eat only when I’m hungry and spacing out my meals (at least 3 hours in between each meal or snack) but after a while I gave up and just started eating whatever/whenever.  I was tired and eating on a plane is tough because you have to be on their eating schedule.  Here we go…

We woke up at 3:55am to catch our flight.  I split my prepared breakfast in 2 stages.  A muffin right away…

strawberry banana muffin

And another one on the Chicago flight (~8am) + apple:

muffin + apple

We had a 4 hour layover in Chicago and tried to eat as late as possible.  We passed by so many delicious looking places…

dipped apples

I didn’t get any.  I was good :)

Then we saw the Vosges boutique and my heart started racing.  Seriously, I’m sick

We did a lap around the airport and I came back and got a 4 piece box of truffles :D

I haven’t eaten them yet. Hopefully they didn’t get squished in my bag.  Don’t they look pretty?

For lunch we grabbed some sandwiches.  Here is mine:

Italian sub with cheese, deli meats with mustard, tomatoes and hot peppers

And I had a brownie I’ve eyeing since we got to the airport.  Again, had to get my chocolate fix :D

16 hour plane food.  Yeah, it was a lot :)

plane lunch: chicken terriaki, roll, salad + oatmeal cookie

This meal was uneatible by my standards, I ate a few bites and gave it to my husband (he actually liked it).  I ate the roll and saved the rest for later.  About 3 hours later, I had the cookies (Adam gave me his too – in fact, I got all of the desserts on the plane :) )

2 oatmeal chewies

Someone got a beer… ;)

Adam on the plane with beer

Tsingtao beer

It was a rice beer, and he said it was actually really good despite being out of a scary looking can.  I didn’t try it – the idea of beer just didn’t seem appealing to me at all.

A little while later, I decided to eat the “salad”.  Yes, this is United Airlines’ idea of a salad.  I call it lettuce with dressing.  Ridiculous!

plane "salad"

I actually brought a bunch of baby carrots and grape tomatoes with me because otherwise they would have gone bad.  You have no idea how many funny comments I got from my husband, but hey, it totally worked out.  This still wasn’t amazing but any standards but did the trick for a while.  And I had some pretzels they gave us a while back.

A few hours later they gave us this:

plane noodles

I was a little scared at first, but it was actually like ramen noodles.  Pretty tasty but not very nutritious.  We were probably 10 hours into the flight by then, I wasn’t very picky.

And more food hours later … I ate all of it!

more cookies from my husband

That was that.  Listening to my hunger cues got harder as the flight went on.  I was starving, then stuffed, the starving again.  After about 11 hours on the plane I almost lost it, but we made it :)   We even walked around Hong Kong a bit (and got a quick meal) before crashing.  So far, we’re super impressed and SO excited to be here.  I’m off to take a shower and continue discovering what the City has to offer.  I can’t blog every day but I’ll do a photo recap every once in a while.  Yay, we’re in Hong Kong!!! :D

B&B – The South End Buttery and Banq

Hi bloggies,

Did you miss me? ;)   Yes, I’m in Asia but I’m too exhausted to write (we are having a blast already despite being crazy tired!).  However on my one billion hour flight over there I had quite a bit of time on my hands, so I decided to write about my most recent B&B experience (I have a crazy backlog of stuff I want to share with you!).  After our lovely dim sum brunch, surprise surprise I wanted chocolate.  Somehow no matter how satisfying a meal is, I still want dessert, especially on days when I decide to indulge a little (or a lot).  This being a Sunday, even with decent weather outside, my husband and I decided to walk over to the South End and do a little B&B action… this time not only did it involve baked goods and beverages in bakeries and bars, but we even ended up at the (South End) Buttery and Banq (how’s that for a triple B&B?! ;) )

Let’s start with the first B (my personal favorite)…

BAKED GOODS AT THE SOUTH END BUTTERY

I asked Katy, a friend of mine (that has a huge sweet tooth just like I do – which makes her a trustworthy source) to recommend a bakery near China Pearl.  She said: “forget China Town – the best stuff is in the South End [(you know you were drooling when I reviewed our last visit to Flour Bakery in the South End!)] – try the Buttery.”  I asked her what her favorite baked good from there was, and she recommended the carrot cake cupcake.  I was surprised to hear that because Katy is allergic to nuts, but she said their cupcakes didn’t have any.  So off to the Buttery we went.  Upon arrival, I could not contain my excitement.  The place was SO cute!  Perfect on a leisurely Sunday afternoon.  I checked out the carrot cake cupcake but quickly realized that the nuts are my favorite part so the double chocolate cupcake caught my eye.  The brownies also looked pretty good (they had regular chocolate brownies and sweet potato brownies – those sound pretty cool, heh?), but once I had cupcakes on my mind there was no turning back.  I got the cupcake.  Look how pretty it is!!! :)   Of course I took a quick picture and dug into this baby right away!

The Buttery chocolate cupcake

Hmm, this is where my excitement stopped.  It wasn’t bad, but I have to say I’ve had better cupcakes out of a box… and you know that doesn’t score any bakery “brownie points” here.  I had a few more bites, let my husband try it, and threw the rest away!  What?  Elina throwing a cupcake away?  Seriously, I’m pretty sure this is the first time that’s ever happened.  I’m not going to say this is the worst cupcake I’ve ever had (it wasn’t) but that particular day I thought I wasn’t going to waste calories on a sub-par cupcake.  We left.  I was sad.

We turned a corner to get to the second part of the B&B… and wound up at Banq

BEVERAGE AT BANQ

I’ve been to Banq before – for dinner.  The place is so modern and very New York like, or at least that’s as close as we get to New York style here is Boston.  My husband and I absolutely love this kind of vibe but were extremely disappointed with dinner there about a year ago (average food, horrible service, overpriced given the previous 2) but a drink there sounded innocent enough.  Here is a little picture of the bar and the super cool ceiling :D

Banq bar

Banq ceiling

It was maybe 2pm at this point.  I didn’t know what kind of drink to order.  I don’t drink that often, especially in the afternoon.  I decided to go for a dessert like cocktail, given my less than stellar bakery experience just minutes ago.  Can you tell I was really upset?  I get extremely excited about my baked goods and when they disappoint, I get moody

I scanned the menu….

Banq menu

and decided on the Winter Warmer: kahlua, gingerbread liqueur, nutmeg and milk.  Sounds good, right?  It was!!!

Banq cocktail

Aaah, much better!!  This was very smooth, slightly creamy and sweet – kind of like a gingerbread iced chai.  Yum!  Maybe I’ll give dinner at Banq another go some day (a few of my friends love it there!).

But wait… there is more!  Do you think I could just give up on my baked good unsatisfied craving?  Flour was just a block away!  I really considered going there for a few minutes (my husband really loves their rolls by the way so he wasn’t about to complain about our mini detour) but then thinking of the Buttery again made me upset.  I really wanted to like the place.  Seriously, it is just such a cute little place!  I really didn’t want to write a negative review.  We went back.  This time I thought I went with the safe choice.  I got a chocolate brownie (even though the sweet potato one was intriguing).  I had it to-go, so a few hours later when I was ready for a little treat again, I gave it a whirl.  Doesn’t it look amazing (again)?

The Buttery choc brownie

The verdict?  Eh, again!  I had a few bites and tossed it as well.  The best part was the little bit of the chocolate drizzle on top.  The brownie was super buttery and rich, but just not very chocolaty.  It was almost gingerbread like, and that’s not what I want when I get a brownie.  So yeah, I’m sorry to say but both of my trips to the Buttery were a bust.  Anyone else tried it?

See you later with a recap of my eats while traveling for nearly 30 hours + our first meal in Hong Kong!
