Fun plans make the day fly by

How was everyone’s hump day?  Mine totally flew by because I had a fun dinner + movie date planned for after work :)  Katie and I went to UFood for a healthy dinner and then went to see The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.  We actually were talking so much we almost missed the beginning of the movie (well the previews I guess)!  The movie was really good despite being a little long.  I shed a few tears in the dark… it was pretty uplifting though – made me appreciate the time with my amazing husband even more. :)

 Onto food…

I’ve been craving stove-top oats ever since I made them last, but it’s just so hard to wake up extra early on weekdays to make it… and on weekends there are just so many other great breakfast recipes to be made that oatmeal often gets the shaft.  But today I actually set my alarm 30 minutes early because I really really wanted to have a good bowl of banana oatmeal.  Of course I made it Kath-style with marshmallow-bananas and lot of awesome toppings.

banana oats with barney butter and trail mix

In the oats: 1/3 cup dry rolled oats made wtih 1/3 cup water and 1/3 cup skim milk + some raisins and 1/2 banana.  I cooked it for about 5 minutes of the stove, mixed in a tablespoon of ground flax at the end and topped everything off with a serving of Archer Farm’s cranberry nut trail mix and 1 T of chunky Barney Butter.  The white chocolate chips melted all over the oatmeal and the whole thing tasted like an amazing dessert… for breakfast!  I ate this at 7:30 am and by noon wasn’t even close to hungry so I went to the gym without even needing a mid-morning snack.  How’s that for staying power?!! 😀

I ate this bar in 2 stages – 1/2 for an afternoon snack and the other 1/2 at the movies.  The sweet and salty combo makes you feel like you’re eating something naughty but you’re really not! A perfect movie (and any time) snack!

snack for the movies: seedless red grapes

Total calories for the day: 1395

It was another good one today.  I think not going to the gym this past weekend really recovered my muscles and my workouts have been just extra intense this week.  Excellent.  I started with a 15 minutes abs class, a really great 40 minute spinning class and finished with 20 minutes on the ellipticalDo you want to see my workout stats?  I don’t know if anyone cares – I don’t mind posting though so let me know!

And she’s off…

I liked that movie, too :)
I have never made stovetop oats before. Can you really taste a difference?
I would love to see your workout stats. I cant’ believe you fuel them on your calorie count…do you feel ok on days like today? I am so hyper-aware of calories lately. I know you’re trying to lose so it makes sense that you would go lower.
    All your eats look great..the salad..the salty/sweet bar..yum.

Ok, Lara … good to know about the workout stats. I actually got a really full feeling mid-afternoon (after the half of the bar) and had to postpone dinner because I just wasn’t hungry (my poor friend Katie was starving but she was too nice to tell me!). So yeah, my calories were lower than usual because I just wasn’t that hungry. Normally as you know, I’m much closer to 1650.
And yes, I can really taste the difference between stove-top and microwaveable oats – stove top oats are much much creamier!

First of all, what is that bar you ate? I didn’t see the name anywhere.

Secondly, yes I LOVE seeing both your workout stats AND your calories. As someone still trying to lose about 20 lbs. (I think), I enjoy comparing your sample menus to mine, and your workouts to mine. It’s very enjoyable.

Liz, the bar is the Clif Mojo mountain trail mix bar… scroll over pictures for descriptions next time, you may be able to find more details on the foods I eat :) Good luck with your weight loss! I’m glad my calorie totals are helpful to you – when I first started reading blogs I also really appreciated calorie counts since I was (and still am) trying to lose weight.
