Flour Bakery & Cafe

January 24th, 2009 · 11 Comments · bakeries and more

I’ve been neglecting my B&B section of the blog, and that’s just silly! 😛  A few weeks ago I went to one of my favorite spots in Boston – Flour Bakery & Cafe.  A few of my girlfriends wanted to hang out and when I mentioned I was craving a pastry (ok, when do I ever NOT crave a pastry 😉 ), the girls were happy to meet up for a little bakery date.  I’ve been to Flour before – I got a brownie and remember thinking it was one of the best brownies I’ve ever had.  I’m a bit of a brownie snob, so that says a lot.  It’s been way too long since my last visit and I wanted to see if this was still true (I’ve eaten many brownies since but the Flour brownies still really stood out in my mind).  Another upside to going to a bakery with a bunch of girls – I got to taste what they ordered to0! 😀

Flour has 2 Boston locations, one in the South End district and a newer, larger spot in the Fort Point Channel.  I’ve only been to the South End one because it’s closer, although I did attempt to go to the Fort Point location once only to be greeted by a closed door.  It looked really nice, though.  I seriously had to hold the tears back.  You know when you just crave something, really look forward to having it all day, and then it doesn’t happen?  Yeah, that’s what happened last time, but it’s ok… I’ll be back! :)  The South End spot is very small, and always seems to be busy.  Of course that’s because their baked goods are to die for, and apparently (I haven’t tried it myself but have heard from reliable sources) their sandwiches are also ass kicking :green:

Back to my bakery date… I contemplated getting something new, but common… who was I kidding, I had to order the brownie again!  It looked nice and hefty too – I am not really into air light sweets.  I want to know I’ve eaten something when I’m done 😆

I think baked goods are even better with some coffee or tea – I went the tea route this time and ordered the White Snow tea.  It came in a really cute pot :)

Was the brownie the best I’ve ever had?  No.  It was very good, though.  I think I built it up in my head too much.  Would I order it again next time I’m at Flour?  Absolutely!

Oh, and as promised a few pics of my girlfriends’ eats.  I taste tasted all of them and they were all delicious!

The lemon lusttart & bright lemon curd in a flaky sweet tart shell:

The lemon tart was very lemony and quite refreshing on the palate.  You can even pretend it’s not that bad for you, although you’d probably be lying to yourself 😛

Raspberry crumb barbuttery base, sweet raspberry jam, streusel crumb topping:

This tasted very homemade – the raspberry jam was definitely the dominating flavor.  Maybe I should try to recreate something like that at home?

There was also an oatmeal cookie that was ordered, that was said to be good, but I wasn’t able to snap a photo or taste it, and my other friend ordered the brownie as well (after seeing mine) and loved it.

If you live in Boston and still haven’t been to Flour, you must go!  And if you don’t live in Boston and ever come to visit, check this place out.  The South End location is also in a cute neighborhood, so you can swing by there after a nice brunch in the ‘hood or stop by for a bite before doing a little boutique shopping.

Now let’s hope I don’t wait this long for my next B&B inspired trip.  My last post was over a month ago!  Eek 😳

OMG! I am so jealous that you live in the Boston area–it seems like there is a huge foodie presence there. I have been wanting to go to Flour bakery since Cristin at Eat Like Me goes there all the time and I would totally stalk her if I lived there 😉 Hehe. Ok, not in a creepy way. Have you ever seen her there?!
Seriously though, that brownie looks amazing! I agree that you should feel satisfied after eating a dessert, and that looks really substantial and delicious.

Haha, Lara, no I haven’t seen Cristin there, although I don’t know what I would do if I did. I probably wouldn’t even say anything to her..

Miss tiffie, I think it would be so dangerous if I worked right by there. Seriously this place makes me a litle (ok, that’s an understatement) weak. Actually I heard about their cinnamon rolls, but of course they were all sold out when we got there. Maybe next time!
