Be kind to your body and mind

Hi bloggies!  I’m sorry but there was no baking in my kitchen tonight.  Instead I shopped ’till I dropped… and then watched an episode of the Biggest Loser 😀

I was reflecting a lot about the way I’ve been living lately and whether I’m happy with where I am.  I realized that despite trying to lose weight I’ve been basically maintaining for over 6 months, and that’s mostly due to extremely restrictive behavior followed by bingeing (which brings me straight back to square 1).  Not productive!  I thought I was doing pretty well the last few weeks.  I’m not sure if this is noticeable in my daily posts, but I’ve definitely allowed myself to go over my calorie range on quite a few occasions, and didn’t beat myself up over it (big step!).  I thought that this meant that I was getting better at balancing being healthy and sane but last night I walked away from my favorite brownie when I had dinner at Au Bon Pain which left me feel deprived.  My husband said: “you never just treat yourself with your favorite cookie (or brownie) for no reason whatsoever!”  It was an interesting statement because every diet book will tell you not to treat yourself with food, but I love food and baked goods make me happy.  My husband knows that it’s important for me to indulge once in a while, just because, otherwise I break down… and it’s not pretty!  He also thinks that I am perfect the way that I am and should just maintain instead of trying to lose weight, but that’s another story.  I’m not ready to maintain just yet.

Anyways, with that in mind, I decided to let a little loose today and in the upcoming month.  It is the holidays after all, and as long as I balance the “treats” with healthy eats and plenty of exercise, I should be able to at least maintain.  I think maintaining during the holidays is a victory too.  So let’s see how I did…

BREAKFAST

Last night I did not pack any of my food.  So this morning I was running around like a headless chicken trying to come up with something to bring to work.  Oh, on top of that, I also prepped dinner because the pork had to be marinated for at least a few hours and it was still frozen last night.  I managed to pull it off though 😀

Still no decent bananas in the house (we bought some last night but they are too green for my taste), so I went for plan B… “apple pie oats.”

I microwaved 1/2 an apple (chopped) for 2 minutes, then added a packet of Nature’s Path organic multigrain raisin instant hot cereal (the exact name of the flavor may be a little different, but it had a few kind of grains, raisins and brown sugar I know that), topped it off with a packet of Barney Butter and enjoyed it with the rest of the apple sliced up.  Very delicious!  I’ll go out and say that this is the best combo of a warm sweet breakfast without bananas.  Quite a specific category, huh?  It’s like those commercials that say things like: “This is the official cheesy snack of the Red Sox.”  Hmm, that’s a pretty specific category… 😕  Anyways, moving on… :)

LUNCH

Lunch was not very exciting, because again, I was quite unprepared.  But this soup, salad and sandwich combo was pretty delicious nonetheless.

 

So above you can see 1/2 cup of Pacific Brands organic ginger carrot soup, Arnold’s sandwich thin with 2 thin slices of American cheese (toasted) and a simple lettuce/cucumber/tomato salad with 1 tablespoon of Annie’s goddess dressing.  I felt a little overwhelmed with all these choices… I just didn’t know whether I should be having soup with the sandwich, the salad with the sandwich, all separate… I dunno, I was a little all over the place 😮

I finished lunch off with a dark chocolate Adora disk (not pictured).

LOTS OF SNACKING

There were quite a few snacks throughout the day.  Since I decided to let myself indulge a little bit more, when a co-worker brought some homemade cookies I decided to give them a try!  He brought 2 kinds: chocolate chip and toffee.  I grabbed one of each (as pictured) but ended up eating only the chocolate chip one.

Did you know that today was the National Cookie Day?  I guess I had a cookie to honor it 😀

Second snack: a cranberry almond kind bar.  I just got this last night and couldn’t wait to give it a try :)

(In the background you see the special discounts offered at the mall where I work which I was reviewing… and yes, I had to take advantage of them! 😀 )

I just love the whole almonds in the bar!  It’s real food, for sure!

And then, I noticed this fun message on the bar as I was looking through the ingredients list.  It said: “Be kind to your body, your taste buds and the world.”  I just loved that message!  … And I love companies that believe in healthy delicious food and give back to the community (5% of all their profits benefit different programs – currently to end the conflict in the Middle East).  To this message I add my own… be kind to your mind (and don’t beat yourself up when you’re less than perfect!)!

WORKOUT

I was dying to get a long run in… it’s been like 3 days! 😀  On my schedule I had a 60 minute run planned, so I jumped on the treadmill after work, set it to “Random” and ran for 60 minutes (as planned) at 6.2-6.3 mph with the treadmill randomly changing inclines.  It was long and a little tough (my foot still hurts a little) but I was proud of myself for doing this!  I also burnt over 700 calories so that was pretty good too.  And then as I got off the treadmill, I ran into a spinning instructor who told me I looked great and definitely lost a lot of weight!  Ooook, I haven’t lost ANY weight, but it was still pretty nice to hear.  I guess I looked particularly buff or something in my sweaty tank 😉

SHOPPING + TREATS

And then I finally hit the mall to take advantage of the discounts offered just today.  Let’s just say I did some serious damage.  I mostly bought things for myself, but I also maybe got a gift for someone (this someone will be reading this post so I can’t provide any details :) )

While I was shopping I got hungry.  I knew I had a delicious dinner waiting for me at home so instead of getting dinner at the food court I treated myself to a second cookie of the day.  It’s National Cookie day, I had no choice but to oblige 😉

So freaking good.  These cookies are the best!

DINNER

I got home almost at 10 pm.  Shopping is time consuming!!!  I quickly microwaved dinner, which my husband cooked tonight.  This morning, as mentioned, I marinaded some pork using this recipe.  My husband then grilled it up and made some boil-in-a bag brown rice.  This was so yummy and super spicy!

Then I had a few spoonfuls of Stonyfield’s frozen yogurt to calm my mouth… it was on fire!! 😯

And then I just vegged on the coach, watching the Biggest Loser.  Good day!  I definitely can’t overindulge like that every day, but it was fun to just let loose a little.  Tomorrow is going to be another crazy day.  I’m going out to an unofficial work Christmas Party (more details in the Saturday post), so I won’t be able to post about tomorrow until Saturday.  Hopefully I won’t be too hungover, but I definitely plan on doing some serious drinking! 😀

  • I think the treating yourself discussion is an interesting one. I didn’t realize you were still trying to lose weight. Actually I haven’t noticed higher calories, I kind of thought some days were low considering your activity level (not meant to be a criticism). I think we should treat ourselves too, and I don’t know why the books say otherwise. But I’m kind of anti-“diet,” the way most food bloggers are! The only downside to treating, I have noticed, is that if I go overboard and then feel horrible. Sometimes that starts a downward spiral for me whereas if I stay healthy 90% of the time, I feel great.
    That was a lot of rambling and I have to get ready for work now but I wanted to put my 2 cents in!
    I think you’re doing great so use your good judgment and you’ll be fine 😉

    You have such a great hubby! Enjoy yourself over the holidays – sounds like you’ve got the right idea going on!

    Great lunch and those KIND bars are SO, SO GOOD! Maybe even though you haven’t lost weight you’ve toned up? After all muscle weights more than fat. Have a blast at your holiday party 😀

    Treating yourself is a must! I’m glad you enjoyed the cookies (or at least one of the ones that I made!) and have already warned you that more treats will be sent in with Mike over December – I love the baking but cannot keep it all around the house! And remember that you look great – the feeling great though is even more important. See you tonight!

  • I finally learned that I have to enjoy my treats, I mean what is life if you never eat some of the things you love.. it just makes you feel sad or ok it makes me sad!

    Innz, you should try pork terderloin… I think it doesn’t have the “pork taste.”
